Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine, with Stock, NVSN, .58 cal., 12'' barrel, finished in the white, walnut stock, brass hardware, and captive ramrod. Mfg'd by the Springfield Armory from 1855-1857. Lock features Maynard self-priming device, three-leaf rear sight, correct three-groove rifling, with approx. 4,020 mfg'd. Union Army's quarterly field reports, dated Dec. 31, 1862, report at least 400 pistol carbines were still in service and found in photographs with both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Originally conceived for cavalryman as a pistol for horseback, but with the addition of the stock troopers could use it for dismounted fighting. Lock is dated 1855 with Federal eagle to Maynard priming device cover, as well as ''U.S. Springfield''; bottom lower tang of stock with small numeral ''7''. Condition is about fine with light carbon toning to bright surfaces. Pistol's stock with small fracture at top lockplate screw. Stock attachment remains in excellent condition with very light toning and minor discoloration to brass components. Priming device remains loaded with period caps. Est.: $3,500-$5,000. (Antique)
