Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1855
Manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1856. The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine features a detachable buttstock, steel swivel-mounted ramrod with concave tip, lock with Maynard self-priming device, clean-out screw on the bolster and a two-leaf rear sight graduated to 400 yards. Sling swivels are mounted on the barrel band and stock and a sling ring is mounted on the buttcap. The pistol stock and detachable stock are oil finished with brass mountings. The carbine has the assembly number "2" on the butt cap and "6" on the stock yoke. The lock plate is dated "1856" behind the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1855". The primer door is marked with the Springfield eagle and shield motif, and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" is marked on the lock ahead of the hammer. The left barrel flat is stamped with "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. An Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of two script initials in a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the left stock flat. The unique Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine is one of only three handguns manufactured by Springfield Armory. The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine was issued as a detachable stock carbine to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments in conjunction with the Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver. Springfield Armory manufactured only 4,021 of these distinctive weapons between 1855 and 1857. Model 1855 Pistol-Carbines continued to be issued to Federal volunteer cavalry regiments during the first year of the Civil War. Virtually all of the surviving Model 1855 Pistol-Carbines appear to have been issued. Used examples in very good condition are scarce.

Condition:
Very fine. The metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned. There is scattered light pitting along the length of the barrel with heavier flash pitting on the portions of the barrel surrounding the bolster. The lock plate, primer door, and hammer have traces of flash pitting. The brass furniture on the pistol and detachable stock has a very attractive aged patina. The pistol stock is very fine with sharp edges in the barrel channel, on the flats surrounding the lock and on the left stock flat. The Ordnance inspection mark on the left stock flat is very sharp. The detachable stock is very good overall with scattered handling and storage marks. The finish matches the pistol stock perfectly. The Maynard tape primer is complete and functional and there is a roll of percussion tapes in the magazine. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine is a key piece in any collection of Springfield Armory firearms or U.S. percussion arms.
