Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1875 Officer's Model Trapdoor Rifle, #NVSN, .45-70 cal., 26" barrel, blue and color case hardened finish, checkered walnut stock, set-trigger, blade front sight, and M1873 rear sight. The Type 2 tang sight was removed and the Beech front sight was replaced with a blade sight. Rifle was made in 1877 and not serial numbered. Breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". Lockplate is marked "(Eagle)" next to "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". Barrel is marked "V P (Eagle)" on top. Cleaning rod tube underneath the barrel appears to have been replaced. Rifle is in good overall condition. Barrel was originally blued and now has moderate patina throughout, with brown spots at the front. The receiver, breechblock, cam latch, barrel band, lockplate, trigger guard, and buttplate tang were engraved and case colored. The engraving is clear but case color has gone to a silvery gray. Stock has a circled "P" behind the pistol grip, number "58" behind the tang, and an engraved nickel plated front cap. Early Officer rifles did not have a cartouche. Stock checkering is shallow from use and there is a .75" piece of wood chipped on the left below the rear sight. Wiper end on the cleaning rod was replaced. Action and the set trigger work properly. Bore is very good with sharp rifling. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)
