Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1863 Type 1 Musket, #NVSN, .58 cal., 40" barrel, finished in the white, walnut stock, standard blade front sight, and "V"-notch leaf rear sight. Lockplate is marked "(Eagle)" next to "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with "1863" behind the hammer. Barrel and bolster markings were obliterated by pitting around the nipple. Front sight shows wear from use. Ramrod is full-length and threaded at the bottom. Rifle is in good overall condition. Finish has gone to brown, with areas of pitting, heaviest are on top of the barrel near the nipple. Stock has two cartouches on the left; one is a circled "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin), the other unreadable. Stock shows heavy use, with dents and scrapes throughout, front band is loose. Action works properly. Bore with areas of pitting scattered throughout. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
