Springfield Armory Model 1888 Trapdoor Rod-Bayonet Rifle, #533201, .45-70 cal., 32" barrel, blue and case hardened finish, walnut stock, standard blade front sight, and M1884 "U"-notch adjustable rear sight. Receiver has the serial number and breechblock is marked "U S/MODEL/1884". The M1884 marking was not changed for the M1888 rifle. Lockplate is marked "(eagle)" with "U S/SPRINGFIELD". Barrel is marked "V P (eagle) P" on the left rear, with an "A" on top. Rod-bayonet is in working order. Condition is good overall. Blue and case hardened finish have toned gray, with mottled patina throughout; buttplate is brown, and there is moderate pitting on the trigger assembly. Stock has a boxed "SWP/1891" (Samuel W. Porter) cartouche on the left, with "D/57" stamped in front of the buttplate tang. Stock with scratches and dents throughout, heavier on the lower half. Butt trap tool compartment is empty. Action works properly. Bore and rifling are good, with light pitting throughout. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
