U.S. Springfield Model 1888 ''Ramrod Bayonet'' Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #516208, .45-70 Gov't CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel with block-blade front sight and Buffington rear sight (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle) marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''I'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is correctly marked ''US/Model/1884'' in three lines at hinge; flush-mounted lockplate has a spread-wing eagle clutching olive branches and ''US/Springfield'' ahead of hammer; correct one-piece triggerguard with sling swivel at front; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (top band with stacking swivel), buttplate with sliding door opening to trap for cleaning rod (not present) and marked ''US'' behind tang screw; one-piece ramrod bayonet. Oil-stained walnut fullstock with ''SWP/1891'' (armory inspector Samuel W. Porter) rectangular cartouche on left side. Mfg'd ca. 1889-93. Condition is all original and very good+, with sharp markings, the barrel with a smooth bluish-brown patina, the barrel bands and springs with deep glossy blue, the triggerguard with approx. 75% glossy blue, the lockplate and breechblock showing mottled case colors, the buttplate with light scattered discoloration. Stock is solid and clean with sharp edges, scattered dings and minor chips at bottom of butt, and nice color. Action is strong and smooth; bore is shiny with deep rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
