This is a Model 1884, an antique US military single shot trapdoor rifle chambered for .45-70 Government. The barrel has been cut down for sporting purposes, and older parts were used during manufacture of these rifles. Rifle features a 25" round barrel, dovetailed copper tack front sight, non-adjustable buckhorn style rear sight, sling swivel on trigger guard, serrated curved trigger with a checkered tip, checkered hammer spur, external hammer, straight gripped walnut stock with a 'P' cartouche at the wrist, 'SWP' cartouche at the wrist with a faint date, curved steel butt-plate marked "U.S." with a lever style storage compartment door. The barrel is marked over the chamber with "V, P, (eagle head)", and "P". Rifle retains approximately 20% of its original blued finish with general thinning, scratches, dings, edge wear and pitting. Metal displays thin rust throughout, and metal deformation in many of the screw slots. The butt-plate and trigger guard have turned a light brown patina with age. Observed markings are generally sharp edged. The action is smooth and crisp, and the three cock hammer action works well. The bore is frosty with decent rifling. The wood furniture is good with dents, dings, scratches, and normal handling wear.
Condition is NRA Good.
