Springfield Model 1863 rifled musket converted into a breech-loading rifle. 32.6" barrel. 1st variation, 1870-71. Serial #'s match on barrel and receiver. Lock plate stamped "U.S. Springfield' 1863, and Eagle. U.S. marked buttplate. Breech block stamped "1870 US" with eagles head and crossed arrows. Bore is dark, slightly pitted but rifling is present. Hammer and breech block lock up tight. Metal has turned a plum/gray patina with traces of blue on the receiver. Wood is good and has been varnished. 4 inspectors cartouches are visible on the left stock. Cleaning rod present. A correct. Spanish-American war one claw sling attached A rare rifle.
