Antique Springfield Model 1870 Allin Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, with bayonet and sling, #236, .50 CF cal., 32.5'' barrel with block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and long-range sliding-leaf rear sight, marked ''236'' at breech; trapdoor breech is marked ''Model/1870/(eagle head)/U.S.'' at hinge; beveled lockplate is stamped ''(spread-wing eagle and shield)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' below latch lever, and ''1863'' to rear; iron furniture includes two-piece trigger guard, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top tang, two spring-retained barrel bands, nosecap, and slotted flat-tip ramrod; walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1870-73, in overall ''arsenal bright'' finished metal and oil-stained stock. Condition is very good. Barrel retains much of its bright finish, the balance of the metal is smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth with light use marks and nice grain and color but no inspector's cartouche. Action is crisp; bore is clean with overall light frosting and defined rifling. Bayonet is gunmetal gray and marked ''US/S'' at throat; dark russet leather sling is sound and smooth. Est.: $750-$1,250. (Antique)
