<B>SPODUMENE: VARIETY KUNZITE</B></I><BR> <I>Nilau-Kolum Pegmatite Field, Mawi, Laghman Province, Afghanistan</B></I><BR>Sometimes it is hard to believe that exquisite jewels like this just 'grow', somewhere in the dark recesses of our planet; all by themselves. Part of the charm of this piece is in knowing that it was broken during growth. That the two pieces continued to grow and 'heal' the broken edges and finally; that the two healed fragments grew back together, producing a specimen with more interest value than an unbroken one. Exceptionally transparent and sharp, the upper prism is doubly-terminated thanks to the break. The previously broken top of the lower crystal has also healed into a new termination. Kunzite is noted for being pleochroic: depending on which way you look at it - the color is different. Viewed from the side; the specimen is a peach to chardonnay hue with slightly pink terminations. Viewed from above, the same crystal is a deep lilac color. This jewel measures 4 7/8 inches by 5/8 inches wide by ¾ inches thick.
