[Splendid ceremonies - Plantin Press] - BOCHIUS, Joannes - Descriptio publicae gratulationis, spectaculorum et ludorum, in adventu sereniss. principis Ernesti Archiducis Austriae, ducis Burgundiae (...) An. M.D.XCIIII. XVIII. Kal. Iulias (...). Cui est praefixa, De Belgii principatu a Romano in ea prouincia imperio ad nostra usque tempora breuis narratio (...). Cum carmine panegyrico (...). Antwerp, Plantin Press (Widow of Chr. Plantin & Joannes Moretus), 1595, folio, old polished sp. sheep over boards, skilfully repaired and rebacked with remains of old gilt spine, gilt sides, marbled endpapers, red edges, silk marker, 174-[2] pp. Very good copy with clear impressions of the plates. € 3500/4000 Cfr. ill. First edition of this splendid illustrated description of Ernest of Austria's entry in Antwerp and Brussels in 1594, by the Antwerp town secretary Bochius (1555-1609). The ceremonies were arranged by the Antwerp citizens together with the merchants of Spain, Portugal, Genua, Milan, Florence, Lucca, and the Brothers Fugger. The traditional giant figures of the leviathan, the elephant, and the whale were also present among the decorations erected, and are strikingly depicted on separate plates. Impressive too are the double-page plates showing the advance towards the city, the theater of peace, the equestrial games, and the fires lighted on the market place. All decors were designed by Martin Vos, which were then drawn on a smaller scale by Cornelis de Vos the Second, and Josse de Momper, after which Pieter van der Borcht then made his beautiful engravings, to serve to illustrate the present work. Archduke Ernest of Austria, the son of the Emperor Maximilian II, was in 1594 appointed Governor-General for the Catholic Netherlands by Philips II of Spain. The present work starts with a short history of the Southern Netherlands, taking about 50 pages. Illustrations : engr. title within elaborate border, large woodcut mark on last page, 33 engr. plates by P. van der Borcht and printed music on H1v-2r. Bookplate "T H". Ref.
