Antwerp, Gillis (Coppens) van Diest for Pieter Coecke van Aelst, 1550, folio, mod. overlapping vellum over boards, flat spine titled in ink, [56] pp. (a few very minor (damp)stains, one folding plate repaired in the fold). Excellent well-preserved copy. Cfr. ill. € 3000/4000 Dutch translation (attributed to Gillis van Diest) of the original Latin text of Grapheus (1487-1558), town secretary of Antwerp. This is one of the great Antwerp Renaissance books, showing the magnificent way in which the capital of the Low Countries welcomed the future king Philip of Spain. History later proved the town to have cherished (too) "great expectations" ... Illustrations : title and last text page within elaborate grotesque woodcut border, 29 woodcut ills., some partly coloured, showing triumphal arches, erected by the foreign workers resident in Antwerp, and theatrical decors after designs by Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
