Spitfire (RKO, 1942). Half Sheet (22" X 28"). Released in the U.K. in 1942 as "The First of the Few," this film was retitled as "Spitfire" for the U.S. release. This was Leslie Howard's final on-screen performance, though he would have three more voice-over roles before his death in 1943. Based on the true story of "the plane that busted the blitz," the film follows the life of aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell (Howard), starting at what he believes to be the peak of his career - the enormous success of his mono-planes in the late 1920s. On a visit to Germany, however, Mitchell sees the rise of Hitler and comes away convinced that the plane soon to be known as the Spitfire could be vital for Britain's survival. This is a lovely poster, featuring Howard, co-stars David Niven and Rosamund John and a spectacular dogfight scene depicting the flaming descent of a Nazi aircraft. The restoration is quite well done, greatly diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and folds with some minor retouching on a fold. This half sheet is paper backed and in near perfect condition. The colors are undiminished and the image quality is impeccable. Very Fine+ on Paper.
