Spink - New York. ANCIENT, FOREIGN AND UNITED STATES COINS AND MEDALS. December 10-11, 2001. 1-1097 Lots. 4to. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Byzantine Empire, Latin America, Europe, the United States, and other foreign countries with the focus on coins from the 'Isla de Muerto' wreck, a collection of British medals, and a collection of proclamations and coins relating to Simon Bolivar. The 'Isla de Muerto' collection contains 391 lots of silver cobs (representing many thousands of coins) salvaged from the 'Isla de Muerto' wreck in Ecuador. The wreck may well be the 'Salvador y San Jose,' which sank in 1680. Most of the coins were well worn from having been salvaged in a high energy environment and as a result, many lots did not sell in the auction. New York, original pictorial card covers, 141 pages, 5 color plates, 47 b&w plates, fine, not listed in Gengerke. Lot weight: 1 lbs 1oz. Subject(s): Ancient, Latin American, European, United States, World Coinage.
