Spink - London. THE CLIVE OF INDIA TREASURE. September 28, 2000. 1-432 Lots. 4to. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from Brazil with the focus on gold coins believed to be the personal property of Captain Robert Clive. The gold treasure of Captain Robert Clive (of India fame) was known to have been lost in the wreck of the English East India Company ship, 'Dodington', which sank in 1755 off the coast of South Africa but what happened to the gold after that is a mystery. This sale contains 431 lots of gold pecas and one lot with an 800 reis coin. These were salvaged from an unidentified wreck in the Indian Ocean but are believed by some to be Clive's gold by virtue of the fact that the weight and composition of the find match almost exactly what was listed on the manifest of the 'Dodington' (653 oz. and 6 dwt.). Some have speculated that pirates found where the survivors of the 'Dodington' buried the coins and sailed away with them only to have their ship sink in the Indian Ocean (where the coins were actually recovered). London, original pictorial card covers, 60 pages, 2 color plates, 16 b&w plates, fine. Lot weight: 0 lbs 9oz. Subject(s): Brazilian Coinage.
