Spider-Man Early Test Sample Statue (1967).
Spider-Man Early Test Sample Statue (1967). This early test sample figure from Marx's Marvel superhero series of the Spider-Man statue measures approximately 6.5" tall and is cast in a burnt sienna colored plastic. During Marx's production process, once a figure was okayed for production, it went though the process of perfecting the molds. This was a two-stage process where the figure was mounted in a mold master, once for the side A mold or the front, and again for the side B mold, or the back. The mold masters were usually made of dense plaster. The artists would mount their prototypes in the plaster and often used sealers to prevent any seepage, or gaps between the prototype and the plaster mold forms. Some figures, with outstretched arms, swords and the like, were actually pinned into the mold securely. Once the side A mold master had been developed to make the side A steel injection mold, the master had to be removed from the plaster, and then the process started all over again to make the side B mold master. This process left a few marks on some prototypes, and totally ruined others. The marks, stains, and holes found on surviving prototypes are from the process. Several limited runs or test samples of the molds were then cast before the figure was put into full production. The detail in this sample Spider-Man figure is finely cast; Spider-man's eyes and underarm webbing are captured in the most vivid detail possible. The figure contains a copyright date of 1967, and is in Excellent condition. You would be hard pressed to find a more sterling example of the original Marx Spider-Man figure.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
