Spencer Tracy/Keenan Wynn Original Telegrams
Spencer Tracy/Keenan Wynn Original Telegrams - "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (1944) was one of the most successful and popular war movies made while WWII was still going on. That is because it is the celebration of the true story of "The Doolittle Raid", based on Doolittle Raider Ted Lawson, who helped Lt. Colonel Doolittle train pilots to do what at the time was the impossible: launch a full squadron of bombers, fully loaded with bombs from an aircraft carrier to attack central Japan. It became the first successful "retaliation" attack on Japan since Pearl Harbor (after several failed attempts to "get even"). It starred Van Johnson as Ted Lawson, and Spencer Tracy as Lt. Colonel James Doolittle. In a time now where everything is e-mailed, texted and twittered, original actual Western Union Telegrams, the "social media" of the day, have becomes extremely collectable. The first was sent by Spencer Tracy (though the telegram spells his name "SEPNCER"!) to Van Johnson, thanking them for a visit to his house after they finished filming the movie, and for bringing him his beloved beer and gin. The second telegram is from Keenan Wynn, who was Van's best friend, and the first husband to Van's wife Edie (they remained friends even after the 'change in partners"). It was set to his then wife Evie telling her he was "safe". At the time, Wynn was known to disappear from days at a time (mostly due to a drinking problem), which was one of the reasons she left him for Van. Both of these rare original Telegrams comes directly from Van Johnson's personal collection, and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
