Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine
This is an excellent example of a Model 1865 Spencer Carbine with the Stabler magazine cut-off. The receiver, loading lever, hammer, and buttplate have a casehardened finish. The receiver has the cavalry sling bar and ring on the left side. The carbine is fitted with the characteristic Model 1865 sling swivel on the buttstock. The folding leaf sight is graduated to 900 yards and has a center sighting notch. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The top of the carbine receiver is marked: "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT'D MARCH 6 1860". The model designation, "M.1865" is located on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. A "W" Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the left barrel flat. The boxed script Ordnance sub-inspector initials "EAW" are stamped in a vertical rectangle behind the sling bar and the Ordnance final inspector's script initials "DAP" are stamped in an oval behind the sub-inspection mark. Small sub-inspector initials "E.A.W." are located on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate. The Model 1865 Spencer Carbine was issued in limited numbers in the final months of the Civil War. It was the primary carbine used by the regular U.S. Cavalry regiments (including the 7th Cavalry) in the west prior to the issue of the Model 1873 Carbine. Complete with an extra breechblock assembly.

Fine. The barrel has approximately 40% blue with the balance a dark patina with a few small areas of minor spotting and some minor pitting on the muzzle. The hammer and lock have a dark patina with some pin prick type pitting. The frame shows approximately 40% of the faded original case colors with much of the pattern remaining. The breechblock retains most of the bright fire blue finish. The wood is fine with exception of a long shallow gouge on the right side buttstock, there are several splinters (moderate at the top) missing around the lock and overall minor dents and scratches. One cartouche is faint, the other clear. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The extra breechblock assembly is excellent with almost all of the original bright niter blue and case colors remaining. Mechanically fine, except for the loose Stabler cutoff.
