By tradition, this carbine was purchased by Lt. John Lock Clarke, who served in the 12th Rhode Island Infantry. Clarke was an officer and Quartermasterand purportedly this carbine and a mate were private purchase by Clarke from Mr. Sheldon Parker of Cumberland, RI. some 30 years ago from the 84 year old grandson of Clarke. The grandson had maintained them within the family. An interestingtype story of a Spencer and this particular carbine is included. Our consignor has supplied an affidavit attesting to the above information. An exceptionally good example of a sought after Civil War to Indian War Era carbine.
