Speeches Given by Byrd's Chief Eng. Mulroy 1930s
Speeches and Addresses Given by Byrd's Chief Engineer Thomas B. Mulroy. A group of five typescripts of speeches given live and on the radio by Mulroy after his return from the First Byrd Antarctic expedition. At least two of these were radio addresses promoting an essay contest in conjunction with the 1931 release of a movie Dirigible, directed by Frank Capra, about (not surprisingly) a journey to the South Pole. Quoting from the beginning of the first of these addresses: "Before relating some experiences on the three great expeditions of Rear Admiral Byrd...the conquest of the North Pole, the Atlantic Ocean and the South Pole by aircraft...I want to say a few words about a most interesting contest which this Station is holding to make radio audiences in this part of the United States more air-minded. In connection with the national showing of Columbia Pictures' epic of the screen..."Dirigible"...this station is awarding to boys and girls of high school age, university students and to the general public a number of prizes which they will cherish always and be most happy to possess..." These speeches are interesting to read and give detail and insight into the Byrd expeditions that only one of the "inner circle" could impart. Fine condition.
