Spectacular Mauser Commercial Production Model 98 Serviceman's Target Rifle with Sling and Austrian
Blade front and fully adjustable tangent rear sights, with the caliber markings on the left side of the barrel, "crown/ letter" proofs on the chamber next to a winged angel holding a swastika over "T.St.V.", the mark of a Tiroler Standschutzen Verband, a Tyrolean Shooting Association, and the Mauser banner on the rear ring. The bolt is a replacement from another rifle in the same series, only 26 numbers away, suggesting an accidental swap. Smooth straight grip stock, with a pair of shooting themed labels on the underside of the buttstock, a brown leather sling and a flat buttplate. Tyrol was home to the German National Matches at Innsbruck, where the last Nazi Target Match was held July 4, 1944, and many of Germany's top marksmen and snipers hailed from the region. A popular target for "liberation" by American soldiers, nearly all of these rifles were chopped down to fit in a G.I. duffle bag, making this uncut rifle, already only 1 of 1000, extra scarce.
