This Burnside Carbine was manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., of Providence, Rhode Island, late in the Civil War. The carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the frame that identifies it as a 5th Model carbine. The barrel has a military blue finish and the breechblock, loading lever and receiver tang are bright niter blue. The receiver, hammer, and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The barrel is fitted with a two-leaf folding rear sight. A bright-finished sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top of the receiver and "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE RI." is roll-stamped on the right side plate. The top of the barrel is stamped "CAST STEEL 1864" in small letters ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "18162" is located on the top of the receiver and breechblock. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with two script three- initial Ordnance inspection marks with rectangular borders. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark "N.S.P." is stamped on the comb of the stock. Single letter Sub-Inspection marks are stamped on most major components. The Burnside breech-loading carbine was one of the most important and widely issued Civil War Federal cavalry carbines.
BBL: 21 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 54 percussion
Finish: blue/case-hardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 18162
Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains nearly 90% plus of the original military blue, niter blue and case hardened finish. The carbine appears to be un-fired and shows only storage wear. The case colors on the receiver hammer and breech lever are vivid. The case colors on the buttplate have faded slightly. The left side and top of the barrel has some scattered patches of surface rust but no visible pitting. There is some light surface rust on the lower receiver tang and some minor scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard. The bore is perfect. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in very fine condition with all of the original oil finish and raised, un-handled grain. The Ordnance inspection stamps on the left side of the stock wrist are very crisp and clear. The stock and forearm have a number of minor storage scratches and dents. This is a very fine example of a Civil War Burnside Breech-Loading carbine.
