Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Semi-Deluxe Rifle with Factory Letter
Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Winchester Arms Museum letter that states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 23, 1891. The letter states that the rifle was chambered for the .40-65 W.C.F. cartridge and equipped with an "octagon barrel, set trigger, X stock and pistol grip". The rifle has a blued bolt, loading gate, barrel and full length magazine. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The barrel is fitted with a "Winchester Express' front sight with ivory bead and has a blank in the rear sight dovetail. A folding "combination tang peep sight' is mounted on the receiver tang. The fancy grain walnut, highly figured, stock and forearm have a satin oiled finish. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE - / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. - " in front of the rear sight dovetail. The caliber, ".40-65 W.C.F." is stamped between the rear sight dovetail and the receiver. The underside of the receiver tang has the 1884 and 1885 patent dates stamped behind the trigger and the serial number, "62839" between the tang screws.

Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue and 30% casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the original blue with some thinning on contact points and wear on the edges. The bolt has 98% of the blue finish; the loading gate finish has faded to a plum patina. The receiver has strong case colors on the right side and tang. The case colors on the left side of the receiver and the contact points have faded to a silver-gray patina. The case colors on the bottom of the loading lever, forearm cap and buttplate have a mottled gray patina. The metal surfaces are smooth and free from handling wear. The highly figured, fancy walnut stock and forearm are in very fine - excellent condition with most of the satin finish and very little handling wear. There is a 1/16-inch gap between the forearm and the forearm. All of the markings are crisp. This is a very good example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with special order fancy grain walnut stock and forearm and set-trigger.
