Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle
This is a very fine example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has a special order, 28-inch, full octagon, barrel fitted with a sporting type rear sight and nickel-silver, fixed blade, front sight and full-length magazine. The pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured burl walnut with checkered panels and a high polish varnish finish. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate and ebony inlay on the pistol grip. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate are blued. The forearm cap, receiver, loading lever, hammer and butt-plate have a color casehardened finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-65 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1894 and 1895 patent dates behind the trigger end inscribed with the serial number "28716" between the tang screws.

Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the original blue and 60% casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have most of the original blue finish with some scattered and very minor spotting and minor edge wear. The bolt has 95% or more of the original high polish blue finish; the bluing on the loading gate is thin with a blue-gray patina. The receiver has vivid case colors on the top and sides and some silvering on the receiver bottom and tangs. The forearm cap, lever and hammer have nearly 50% of the casehardened finish with faded case colors. The case colors on the crescent steel buttplate have faded to a silver patina. The highly figured stock and forearm are in excellent condition with most of the original high polish varnish finish. The finely checkered panels on the forearm and pistol grip have some handling wear but remain in excellent condition. Wear on the forearm and stock is limited to very minor handling marks. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. This is a very fine example of an early Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with special order 28-inch octagon barrel.
