Special Order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Rifle with Factory Letter
Manufactured in 1896, this High Wall rifle features a blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights on a part octagon #3 barrel. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "- MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-" and "32-40" at the breech. The bottom flat under the forearm and ahead of the forearm is marked "3". There is a sling eye mounted on the underside of the barrel. Blue barrel, casehardened remaining parts, single set trigger and mounted with deluxe, nicely figured checkered walnut forearm with ebony forend insert and pistol grip stock with ebony insert on the bottom of the grip, sling eye and Swiss style buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, rifle configuration, caliber, #3 32 inch part octagon barrel, checkered pistol grip stock, plain trigger, screw eyes for sling and swivels, that it was received in the warehouse on February 25, 1896 and shipped out on March 18, 1896. Complete with a barrel attaching palm rest, bullet seater and hard case with maroon lining.

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 90% much faded original blue finish with some scattered scratches and spotting. The receiver shows traces of original faded case colors with a smooth silver gray on the balance. There are strong original case colors in the protected areas of the lever with a smooth mottled silver gray patina on the balance as well as on the buttplate. The wood is fine with much of the original varnish remaining and several minor scratches and dings on the stock, a few minor handling marks on the forearm and overall crisp checkering. Crisp and clear markings. Mechanically excellent.
