This is a solid representative example of a Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle that was manufactured in 1892. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address and the top flat at the breech is marked "38-56 W.C.F.". The upper tang is marked "--MODEL 1886--" and the lower tang is marked with the two line, two patent dates as well as the serial number. Dove tailed brass blade front sight and adjustable buckhorn sporting rear sight. The barrel magazine tube and bolt are finished blue and the frame, hammer, lever and buttplate are casehardened. Winchester discontinued the use of casehardened frames on all there rifles in 1901. Full magazine and mounted with a extra fancy, nicely figured checkered walnut forearm with steel end cap and pistol grip stock with ebony insert and steel crescent buttplate. The copy of the accompanying Cody Firearms Museum Records Office sheet verifies serial number 62836 as a Model 1886 rifle, 38-56 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and that it was received in and shipped out on 10-27-1891, order number 12558.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 38-56 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened

Serial Number: 62836
Condition: Very good. The barrel has a pleasant even smooth brown patina with scattered hints of the original blue finish. The magazine tube is a mix with thin original blue finish and smooth brown patina. The bolt retains 95% original bright blue finish. 30% of the faded original case colors remain on the left side of the receiver with the balance of the receiver showing mostly silver gray. The lever and buttplate both are a smooth silver gray patina. The wood is very fine with much of the original varnish remaining, overall scattered minor scratches and dings, and very crisp checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
