Special Order Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Extra Light Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Half-Octagon
Manufactured in 1901, this special order Winchester Model 1894 takedown rifle features a half-octagon barrel, half-magazine, blue finish with casehardened lever and hammer, and is mounted with deluxe checkered oil finished forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and black checkered hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The rifle is equipped with a raised ramp front sight and short range tang mounted peep sight. The rear sight has been removed and a filler block installed. The left upper barrel flat is marked with the two line address and patent date ahead of the rear sight slot with the nickel steel marking and "38-55" behind the slot. The Winchester oval proof appears on the top barrel flat and top of the receiver at the breech. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, takedown rifle configuration, 38/55 caliber, 24" half-octagon barrel (writer believes this to be an factory error), plain trigger, checkered, oiled, pistol grip stock, Lyman front and rear leaf sights, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt, rubber buttplate , extra light, nickel steel barrel and that it was received in the warehouse on September 6, 1901 and shipped from the warehouse on September 13, 1901.

Partially refinished, the receiver. 90% original finish remaining on the barrel with some light scattered spotting and some wear on the muzzle. The receiver retains traces of cold blue finish mixed with refinished smooth plum/brown patina. The hammer and lever have a smooth grayish brown patina with strong traces of original case colors in protected areas. The wood is very good as reoiled showing light to moderate wear to the checkering (which remains crisp for the most part) and a few scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings remain crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
