A remarkable example of Spanish ceramic artistry, this exuberant Talavera faience double inkwell is both functional and whimsical. At its center sits a boldly modeled seated lion in bright golden ochre, its front paws protectively placed around a blue-striped central ink cup. Flanking the lion are two recessed wells, each with removable glazed white ceramic ink pots. The hand-painted surface explodes with typical Talavera motifs: scrolling blue foliage, stylized florals in cobalt, ochre, and green, and a scenic medallion adorning the front panel. Raised on five conical legs, the piece is further embellished with vibrant yellow rope-molded edging and baroque blue-scroll side panels. Underside inscribed Talavera Saso, affirming its workshop origin. A striking and rare early 20th-century desk piece sure to ignite the imagination of collectors and connoisseurs alike.
