Wonderful old rawhide and leather trunk with New Mexico history through the family of General Jose Maria Chavez. Constructed of leather hide and strips over wood, with iron straps and hardware. Remnants of blue and red cloth visible, particularly on sides. In rough shape, as would be expected for something of its age and use. 26” long x 17” wide x 15” tall (closed).

Handwritten letter (included with lot) details its history as follows:
“History of old rawhide chest. Brought to Mexico by unknown party. Brought to New Mexico by Fernando Duran of Chavez. His son Nicolas Duran of Chavez took it to California and back to NM again. From him it came into the hands of his son General Jose Maria Chavez, and from him to his son Patricio Chavez and from him to his daughter Mrs. J. C. Ferran, sold by her son LC Ferran.”
