Spangenberg & Sauer German Model 1860 Breech loading Carbine
Established in 1751 by Johann Paul Sauer, the Spangenberg & Sauer firm would be renamed J.P. Sauer & Sons in 1881. This particular example is a Model 1860 breech loading carbine made for the German (or Prussian) military. Protected blade front and 3 leaf rear sights, with small "crown/ letter" proofs along with a larger royal cipher at the breech. The lock is marked "SP.&SR./ SUHL" behind the checkered hammer, with a spring loaded nipple protector mounted to a separate plate. A folding lever is mounted on the breechblock, with matching numbers on the arm and breechblock screws. Some of the screws are numbered "7". Smooth full length stock, with a combination forearm tip/ front sight protector, saddle ring bar on the left side, straight wrist with finger rest trigger guard, raised comb, "328" stamped on either side of the butt and a flat carbine buttplate with "III.D.110." stamped above the storage compartment.

Condition: Very good plus, with scattered light spotting on the unfinished metal with a coating of protective varnish. Stock is arsenal repaired, with some patches of well fitted replacement wood, pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
