Soviet Buran Space Shuttle Heat Shield Tile
Soviet Buran Space Shuttle 2.01 Black Heat Shield Tile, 5.75" x 5.5" x 2.5". The black heat shield tile was manufactured for use on the Buran ("Snowstorm" in Russian) space shuttle as part of the reusable Thermal Protection System, protecting the spacecraft and the cosmonauts inside from the 1500 C degree temperatures generated during re-entry. The tile was made of special lightweight quartz material with multiple layers of a proprietary heat-resistant composite coating. The Soviet Shuttle Buran ("Snowstorm" in Russian) was authorized in 1976 in response to the United States' Space Shuttle program. Building of the shuttles began in 1980, with the first full-scale Aero-Buran rolling out in 1984. The first and only orbital launch of the shuttle Buran was an unmanned flight on November 15, 1988. Of the 38,000 heat shield tiles that covered Buran, only five had fallen off during the flight. Funding for the project was cut after the launch and neither the second nor third Buran shuttles under construction were completed.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
