This is a Southern Plains Native American Indian Buffalo rawhide shield showing a Thunderbird effigy design from the 19th century. The piece has a rich parfleche rawhide Buffalo construction with trade clothe accenting the top an polychrome mineral painted Thunderbird across the center. The shield shows a stuffed Thunderbird effigy across the front with the beak being a Antler tang. The back shows a willow branch frame with the rawhide hand grasps. This is an exceptional museum quality piece in a very rare pattern. The piece is from the third to fourth quarter of the 19th century. Measures 25"H x 21.5"W. The shield also shows a hammered copper jingle cone with early glass trade beads.
