Southern Cheyenne Ceremonial War Club c. 1880
This is an excellent stone head, skull cracker war club, dating to circa 1880, from the Southern Cheyenne. Overall, the club measures 19 inches in length and has a large 4-inch-wide stone head wrapped in thick sinew and hide-wrapped haft. The head has a unique rolled tin jingle cone dangler attachment with small hasps of horse tail hair. The haft shows a bare hide wrapped gripping section, which indexes at the end with a wonderful drop of long hand-cut hide fringe. Up toward the head, there are two sections of linear beadwork with gaskets of fringe, along with a brass trade tack. The beadwork also extends over the wrap along the head and the entire hide has a nice brown to red earth dye. The head beadwork has the iconic square geometric pattern. The beadwork is all done in glass trade seed beads, all of the correct early period, in colors of cobalt, chalk white, and greasy yellow. There is a little bead loss, however the piece is in good condition for its early age. Provenance: From the excellent collection of Cyrus Eaton of London, England.
