Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
an album of unknown provenance containing 28 cartes including 9 Confederate subjects highlighted by a fine CDV of R.E. Lee, 14 mostly unidentified civilians, and 5 engravings/album fillers. The front leaf is inscribed, To Kate/From-----/December 25, 1863, the giver’s name having been purposely clipped from the page.

A number of cartes have New Orleans back marks, a few with blue-green or orange revenue stamps dating this compilation to the Federal occupation or immediate post-war period. Four of the Confederates are common lithographed Generals, specifically Longstreet, J.B. Magruder, Albert S. Johnston, and Van Dorn. The obligatory Beauregard by Fredericks is present as a CDV.

The highlight is a scarce period copy shot of R.E. Lee, in full view, standing with sword, the original by Vannerson & Jones, Richmond, photographed immediately following Appomattox. In this modified composition, the albumen has been reduced to a smaller oval vignette. The CDV is without back mark but has a blue-green tax stamp.

Another CDV of a bearded civilian is inked Capt Elliott CSA beneath portrait. This is probably Captain John Elliott of Company G., 2nd Louisiana Infantry that served in General Magruder’s division during the summer of 1862. Rounding out the Confederates are two more officers unfortunately unidentified. One is a major in double-breasted frock coat with single star; the other appears to be a company grade officer of underdetermined rank also wearing a regulation frock coat, standing between two seated civilians. The man wears gloves and may be a recently paroled prisoner as the back mark is Hoag & Quick, Cincinnati with three-cent revenue stamp on verso.

Condition: The military views show moderate wear and soiling, G. The carte of the major has a bent and damaged top mount, rippled at the bottom. Lee carte G+. with upper right corner of albumen torn and lifting. Album with brown velvet boards intact but missing spine. Interior pages soiled with foxing, some with tape repairs.
