The South Side Railroad formed in Virginia in 1846, construction started 1849, completed in 1854 connecting City Point with south and west areas of Petersburg to Lynchburg, VA. RR necessary to the Confederacy during Civil War but destroyed by war. US Army rebuilt it. Lt General Ulysses S. Grant requested a railroad to ensure supplies for Siege of Petersburg. Became part of Norfolk and Western and Norfolk Southern's coal route from mountains to port at Hampton Rd. Operated from 1854 - 1870, succeeded by Atlanta, Mississippi and Ohio RR. Prag collection.
