South Italy, Canosa, c.300 BC. A delicately crafted mold made terra cotta figurine in original white and blue slip of "Eros and Psyche". Eros stands nude with right arm extended. Psyche wears flowing grown with left arm extended and also repaired. Much of original paint still remains H: 15.5cm. Head of Eros has been reattached as was his right arm. Excellent facial detail on both figures. On wood stand. Cupid was the Roman god of Love, son of Venus and Mercury; and in Greek mythology he was Eros, son of Aphrodite and Hermes. He took as his wife the beautiful mortal maiden Psyche...on the condition that he would join her only at night so she never saw his face. $800
