South Italy, Apulia, c.385 - 375 BC. A large and attractive "Bell Krater". In red figure and painted by the "Schiller Painter". Side A: Naked satyr stands on right with lighted torch held high with left hand, right hand holds wine bucket. To left Dionysos stands naked and faces right. He has flowing garment draped through his arms and around his back. He holds thyrsos upright with left hand. Representative of "night revels" or night orgies known as the "bacchanalia". Side B: Two standing figures both wearing long and wide flowing chitons stand facing each other. Between them is tall altar. Figure on left holds slender staff with right hand, figure on right holds strigel in right hand. Band of linear design encircles bottom as a gymnasium. Nicely restored. A very attractive and desirable piece! Ht: 16". Ex. Malter Auction 73 lot 371; with another band of double petal designs encircling the top.
