South Italy, Ca. 5th-4th Century BC. The beauty is in its simplicity! This jar was slipped in a light tan glaze. Between the body and the rim of the jar the craftsman has created a textured vertical ribbing, which changes into a diagonal ribbing on the body of the jar. Vessels like this one were likely used to hold water, wine, and other liquids. Original excavation tag is included! 4-3/4"H x 4"W. This olpe is completely intact which only minor surface wear.

Provenance: Ex-Bryon Farwell Collection. Part of a 209 piece collection of ancient pottery featured in the book, "The Farwell Collection" published in 1953 by Franklin P. Johnson, University of Chicago art historian and archaeologist. Byron Farwell was a young Army captain stationed in Italy during WW II, and pieces presented in this book were personally excavated by him in 1944/45 in Ordonia, Italy.
