South African San Ostrich Egg & Brass & Horn Stand
Featured in this lot is an original South African, San People Ostrich egg water vessel and stand. The egg shows a small hole from which the yolk was removed and water can be added. The stand is fashioned from three legs, carved to resemble Springbuck horns, with a simple round brass ring to hold the egg. The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are members of various Khoe, Tuu, or Kx'a-speaking indigenous hunter-gatherer groups that are the first nations of Southern Africa, and whose territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa. The San people would make water vessels from emptied ostrich eggs. The condition of this ostrich egg is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this ostrich egg are approximately 6" X 5" X 5".
