Sotheby & Co. THE PALACE COLLECTIONS OF EGYPT. CATALOGUE OF THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY VALUABLE COLLECTION OF COINS AND MEDALS. THE PROPERTY OF THE REPUBLIC OF EGYPT AND NOW SOLD BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNMENT. February 24-March 6, 1954. 1-2798 lots. 4to. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from the collection that was formed by King Farouk of Egypt, who sought coins with a passion-some may even say with an obsession-matched by few collectors in history. His collecting pursuits may have even contributed to his exile from Egypt and the throne. This exile was followed by the sale of his collection by the Egyptian government. The sale abounded with catalogue errors and misjudgments. Probably the most famous was the cataloguing of an 1804 Dollar as though it was a common coin, with no reference to it's value as a great American rarity. This and other such practices, as well as the bid rules established by Egypt make this an extremely interesting catalogue for study. Pittman, Kosoff, Hans Schulman and a handful of other East Coast coin dealers made fantastic buys at this sale by buying many rarities hidden among group lots, such as a 1913 Liberty Head nickel and pattern United States gold coins.
