Sotheby & Co. CATALOGUE OF THE DISTINGUISHED COLLECTION OF ENGLISH GOLD COINS 1700–1900 FORMED BY CAPTAIN K.J. DOUGLAS-MORRIS, R.N. November 26, 1974. 8vo. 1-237. Original green printed paper boards. Public Auction Sale. London. 1 color coin plate. Text illustrations. Estimates list laid in. cover sunned, interior Fine. This auction sale catalog includes numismatic material from Great Britain from the Captain K.J. Douglas-Morris Collection of English gold coinage. Captain Douglas-Morris started his collection in 1962. From the outset, the objective was to assemble as complete a range of types as possible, concentrating especially on the Patterns and Proofs for which no standard work yet exists, thus enabling the collection to be used for study purposes. The great strength of this collection lies in the superb condition of almost every coin and whilst the Patterns and Proofs are brilliant, almost without exception, the few currency pieces which show any signs of wear are those of such great rarity that better specimens are virtually unknown. For the benefit of the student, especially in the absence of an authoritative work of reference on Patterns and Proofs, every coin has been illustrated and described as fully as an auction catalogue will allow. Of particular interest are the following pieces: Queen Anne, the five-guineas, guinea and half-guinea of Vigo type, 1703 George II, the series of 13 two-guineas from various dies, 1733-53 George III, the complete series of Pattern five-guineas and two-guineas, 1768-77 George III, the run of Pattern and Proof guineas, including 1761 William IV, the five-pounds, two-pounds, sovereigns and half-sovereigns of 1831 Victoria, and the group of Pattern five-pound pieces of 1839. Important for English gold. Lot weight: 1 lbs 6oz. Subject(s): British Coinage.
