Sorority House (RKO, 1939). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Based on Mary Coyle Chase's short story "Chi House," Dalton Trumbo adapted this tale of a middle-class college student (Anne Shirley) who has pledged to a wealthy and pretentious sorority. Of course, like an F. Scott Fitzgerald hero, Shirley comes to realize that the inaccessibility of the rich only masks their hypocrisy. Trumbo also used RKO's earlier "Finishing School" as a source, and he would again turn to the subject of female communal living for 1943's "Tender Comrades." The House Un-American Activities Committee would take particular interest in this screenplay, and Trumbo would be blacklisted throughout the 1950s as a member of the infamous Hollywood Ten. After doing uncredited work (on "Roman Holiday," for example), he became the first blacklisted writer to return to the industry through the efforts of Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger (for "Spartacus" and "Exodus," respectively). This one sheet glitters with the shallow, yet beautiful rich girls and has undergone restoration to clean up staining, touch-up fold line and edge wear, and the top edge still has very small paper loss at the vertical fold line. Very Fine- on Linen.
