Sophie Tucker Handmade Christmas Card (1956)
Sophie Tucker Handmade Christmas Card (1956) - The amazing Sophie Tucker, known as the “Last of the Red Hot Mama’s” was one of the most popular stars in the early 1900’s. Where beauty and a sexy body were the elements that made a woman a star, Sophie, who was neither beautiful, and as she described herself, “had a body like a battleship”, relied on grand talent and an infections personality to pull her audiences in. She was an original, and inspired such greats as Mae West, Carol Channing, Totie Fields, Roseanne Barr, Ethel Merman, Mama Cass Elliot (who derived her nickname from Sophie’s), and especially Bette Midler, who was said to have “channeled her spirit” in her performances. From her early days in vaudeville until her death, Sophie was known to create handmade special Christmas Cards, which were sent out to her very good friends. These became extremely collectable. Sophie used to say that when a famous person would approach her, more times than not they weren’t there to give her a compliment, but to ask if they could “be put on her Christmas card list”! This is one of those rare coveted cards, sent out by Sophie for the Christmas season of 1956. Comes from Van Johnson’s personal collection, and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
