This is certificate number 193 issues to Samuel Brannan on May 25th 1881 for 10 shares. Brannan was one of California’s first pioneers and was in California when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill. It is believed that Brannan was the one who exclaimed “gold, gold, gold from the American River!” when California’s first gold was found. Following the events at Sutter’s Mill, Brannan found great success with different businesses and investments. He was said to be the first Californian millionaire and Gold Rush area printer. After his divorce in 1872, Brannan lost half of his fortune. In his later years, he tried to reclaim his money by entering the brewery business; however he soon developed a drinking problem. Disillusioned with northern California, Brannan wondered south and tried again to strike it rich with mining in Mexico. He managed to pay off all his debt before his death, but he didn’t even have money left over to cover his funeral cost. The stock measures 9” x 4.5” and has little wear.
