Sonora,CA - Tuolumne County - c1904 - Knights Templar Mason's Brass Badge :
A shield-shaped Fob. At top is: San Francisco/ Sept. 1904. Beneath this is an encircled picture of Spanish conquistadors, one kneeling beside the ocean, others standing with arms upraised. Around the circle is printed: Pacific Commandery No. 3/ Sonora, Cal. 1.5 x 1.25.” The badge is associated with the York Rite Order, part of the Masonic tradition espousing the teaching of historical backgrounds, ancient craft customs and new philosophical concepts through its symbols. The Pacific Commandery No. 3 was established in 1858 when a Grand Commandery of the Order for the State of California was formed, with San Francisco designated as Commandery No. 1, Sacramento as No. 2, and Pacific as No. 3 [Ref: www.phoenixmasonry.org/.../KT_California_Uniform.htm]. The “Asylum” of Pacific Commandery No. 3 was originally established in Columbia, but was moved to Sonora in 1882 [Ref: Fifty Years of Masonry in California, Vol. 2, by Edwin A. Sherman, published by G. Spauling & Co., S.F., 1895, pg. 670].
