Song of Songs (Paramount, 1933). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Marlene Dietrich plays the embodiment of innocence in her first role without director/mentor/svengali Josef von Sternberg. Instead, Robert Mamouolian helmed the story of an orphaned peasant (Dietrich) from the German countryside who travels to Berlin to stay with her aunt, and of course, the big city quickly exploits her naivete. Becoming a nude model (Dietrich cannot stay frumpy for long), she falls in love with a struggling artist (Brian Aherne), but she cannot resist the marriage proposal of a hedonistic baron (Lionel Atwill). As in "Blonde Venus," her previous film, Dietrich's character establishes her independence by becoming a cabaret singer, but the past lingers like a von Sternberg shadow... This exceedingly rare one sheet, a Paramount full-bleed poster, has only had minor touch-ups to the fold lines and cross-folds, immediately evident only on the right side of the top fold line. Dietrich glows in stone lithography, and she's especially luminous against an elegant black background. Very Fine on Linen.
