Solid silver mounted small sword circa late 18th century, 38” overall with 31-5/8” blade. This sword is attributed to having been owned by the third governor of Ohio, Samuel Huntington. Refer: John S. DuMontcollection, Lot 99. The sword shows a three-sided colichemard-style blade and the general style and workmanship of the silver most likely American. Also, there is an absence of silver-maker’s hallmarks andcertain aspects of the guard and pommel are very early American looking. The blade appears European. The top throat of the scabbard is inscribed in period script letters “Major S. Huntington” and surmountedby a nicely engraved early Federal-style eagle and the engraving is completely original to-the-period in our opinion. The sword retains its original blued steel hangar and chains which are in near fine condition. The overall condition is very good+ to near fine other than the blade which shows some moderate pitting and erosion, slight cleaning, normal aging, and is remaining in just good condition.
