Sodding / Prostitute Stool Tombstone, A.T. 1880-90
For your consideration is this Tombstone, Arizona Territory sodding / prostitute stool from the 1880-1890s. This stool features cast iron legs and a fabric lined seat secured with buttons. In historical contexts, particularly in some European cities, the term "sodding stool" was occasionally used euphemistically to refer to a small, low stool associated with street prostitutes. These stools allowed women to sit in public while waiting for clients, often in areas where standing for long periods was impractical or drew unwanted attention from authorities. The term has since faded, but it reflects the resourcefulness and visibility of sex workers in urban life. The stool shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 11 1/4" L x 11 1/4" W x 7 1/4" H and weighs 2 pounds and 12 ounces. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. MS193
