Smith's Patent Breech Loading Civil War Carbine

Designed by Gilbert Smith, the production of this breech loading percussion carbine was almost entirely consumed by government contracts. Standard markings on the left side of the frame, "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS", agents' names "ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A." and "SMITH'S PATENT/JUNE 23, 1857". The left rear barrel flat is marked with a small "M" and also has the U.S. Government inspector's single initial "N". Dovetail brass blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight correctly absent of yard markings. Breech loading action with barrel release latch inside the trigger guard, freeing the barrel to pivot downward. Casehardened hammer and action with a saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the frame, and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip walnut stock with a steel buttplate, with two sharp boxed "JM" cartouche stamped on the left side of the stock wrist.

Very fine. The barrel retains 90% plus of the original blue finish overall with some thinning, a few small areas of finish loss, a minor ding and some mild edge wear. The receiver and hammer retain 85% plus bright vivid case colors with some fading to a dove gray on the hammer and a small area of light spotting on top of the receiver. The buttplate retains 60% original case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The reoiled wood is very fine with a minor pressure dent on the left side of the stock at the buttplate and overall only light handling/storage marks. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. A nice Civil War Smith carbine.
