Smith & Wesson Second Model .38 Top Break revolver, .38 cal., 3-1/4” barrel, nickel finish, checkered S&W black hard rubber grips, #30558. This gun is accompanied with an unmarked tooled leather shoulder holster and straps and a six-pointed star badge marked “Special Police B.N. RY.”. Documentation from the consignor includes a notarized letter dated November 28, 2008 indicating this revolver, holster rig and badge descended in the family of William E. “Ed” Black, a detective for the Great Northern Railroad chasing the likes of Bill Madden and Harry Bass, both members of the Wild Bunch. The gun itself is in overall fair + condition showing wear and use; approx. 50% of the frosted, uncleaned nickel finish remains with the balance of the gun gone to a grey patina with scattered areas of light erosion, the bore is dark, the action good and the markings are good; the side plate screw is an old replacement and the grips are worn with several old losses, likely from extensive carry and use. The shoulder holster rig is in overall good condition and the badge appears of the period of the turn of the 19th to 20th century and does not show a hallmark on the reverse; the findings are of the old “safety pin” variety. A great outfit with history to an early Railroad Detective who was active in the field while chasing train robbers. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
